Highlights
  • Pyotr Kochetkov made 26 saves in a 7-0 win over the Jets to improve to 10-0 on the season
  • His 10 straight wins is a Hurricanes franchise record and ties Carey Price for second-longest season-opening streak ever
  • Read below for how Winnipeg’s ninth straight loss unfolded

Pyotr Kochetkov is still perfect.

The Hurricanes goalie stopped 26 shots in a 7-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday, his 10th straight victory to start the season. That is the longest winning streak in Carolina franchise history, as the NHL pointed out right after the game:

Only Jack Campbell has started a season with a longer run. He won 11 straight for the Maple Leafs in 2020-21. Kochetkov matches the 10 Price won to open 2016-17 with Montreal, which makes him the third goalie in NHL history to win his first 10 games of a season. It was his second shutout of the year and the 13th of his career in 135 games. We tracked the streak at 8-0 earlier this week.

Carolina made it easy on him. Sean Walker opened the scoring short-handed at 5:16 of the first period, then the Hurricanes ran away with it in the second. Juuso Valimaki made it 2-0 at 1:55, and Sebastian Aho scored on the power play just 24 seconds later:

Walker added his second of the game at 7:41, and Logan Stankoven buried a loose puck at 9:09 to make it 5-0. Here is Stankoven’s goal:

Stankoven also had two assists. Mark Jankowski scored on the power play in the third for his goal in eight of the last nine games, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi capped it at 7-0. Winnipeg had five shots on goal when the fifth Carolina goal went in.

Stuart Skinner was pulled after that fifth goal, which came on just 17 shots. It was the second straight start he allowed five. He was also yanked in the 6-4 loss at Tampa Bay on Thursday.

The Jets are 4-8-3 and 0-7-2 over their last nine, and they have scored only 16 goals during the skid. Winnipeg has allowed 23 goals in its last four games. Our earlier posts on the slide cover the seventh straight loss and the Anton Lundell hat trick that kept them winless.

Late in the blowout, Valimaki also got in a scoreboard chirp at Tyrel Bauer:

The Jets try to end the skid Tuesday night in Montreal to finish a four-game road trip. Kochetkov and the 12-2-2 Hurricanes visit Nashville the same night.
