Mark Scheifele got his rival back.
The NHL announced Thursday that Winnipeg’s statistical history now includes three eras of the franchise, and it restores Dale Hawerchuk as the club’s all-time leader in goals and points.
That covers the original Jets (1979-1996), the Atlanta Thrashers years (1999-2011) and the current team since 2011. The Arizona Coyotes’ stretch from 1996 to 2024 stays separate.
Scheifele talked about what the change means to him.
“It’s funny, I got a couple of records in my name, but at the end of the day there was always one guy I was chasing and that was Dale,” Scheifele said. “He’s always been on my mind of chasing him and that makes it even cooler actually that he is a part of the new record books and it’s not just my individual goals of chasing him.”

Scheifele sits at 907 points (372 goals, 535 assists) in 961 games for the current franchise, putting all three marks within reach this season. Thomas Steen takes over the Jets’ career assists record in the same consolidation.

Hawerchuk racked up his 929 points in just 713 games across nine seasons with the original Jets before finishing his career in Buffalo, St. Louis and Philadelphia.
He later coached Scheifele for three seasons with the OHL’s Barrie Colts, a stretch Scheifele has credited for shaping him as a player. Hawerchuk died of cancer in August 2020 at age 57.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly explained the league’s thinking in the release.
“Statistics and records are more than numbers — they capture the milestones, achievements and memories that define the history of the game and the communities that support it,” Daly said. “We respect the Jets’ commitment to honoring the franchise’s journey and are pleased that the full history of NHL hockey in Winnipeg now can be celebrated as one continuous story.”
Jets executive chairman Mark Chipman framed it as a move for the fans.
“The Jets teams from 1979 to 1996 helped build the identity and tradition that we can proudly carry forward today,” Chipman said. “For our fans, these players and these moments always have been part of the same Winnipeg Jets story, and we’re pleased that our official records will now reflect that.”
