- Read below for what the depth blueliner brings to Winnipeg
The Winnipeg Jets added some depth to their blue line on Thursday.
They signed defenseman Henry Thrun to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal pays the 25-year-old $850,000 at the NHL level.
Thrun spent most of last season in the minors, and he closed it out with a ring. He played 55 games for the Toronto Marlies with five goals and 23 points.
Then he turned it up when it mattered. Thrun added two goals and nine points across 24 postseason games as the Marlies rolled to the Calder Cup.
Watch Toronto close out Chicago to take the title:
He got into four games with the Maple Leafs too. Toronto landed him last summer, shipping Ryan Reaves to San Jose to get the deal done.
Before Toronto, Thrun spent three seasons with the Sharks, where he logged most of his NHL time. He sits at 123 career games with five goals and 20 assists. A fourth-round pick in 2019, he made his league debut in San Jose.
This is a low-risk depth move for the Jets. The two-way structure lets them stash him with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose if he doesn’t crack the roster, and $850,000 barely moves the cap needle.
Winnipeg has been active on the back end this summer. The Jets already added ex-Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro, and Thrun gives them another left-shot option who just survived a deep playoff grind.
He’ll get his shot to win a job at training camp. If not, the Jets have a 25-year-old with a fresh championship on his resume waiting in Manitoba.
