The Dallas Stars might get a huge boost heading into their second-round series against the Winnipeg Jets. Jason Robertson, sidelined with a lower-body injury, could return for Game 1 on Wednesday.

Robertson hasn’t seen game action since the regular-season finale against the Nashville Predators on April 16. That’s a long time for a team to be without its leading goal scorer, especially in the thick of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Robertson potted 35 goals during the regular season and was second on the team with 80 points.

Stars head coach Pete DeBoer gave a hopeful Jason Robertson injury update on Tuesday. “He’s close,” DeBoer said. “We’ll see tomorrow morning. It’s all in his recovery and how he feels tomorrow”.

That’s the kind of news Stars fans have been waiting for. Robertson was initially tabbed as week-to-week, but his presence in practice this week is a good sign. He skated on the third line Tuesday with Mason Marchment and Wyatt Johnston.

The Stars managed to gut out a tough seven-game series win against the Colorado Avalanche without Robertson and key defenseman Miro Heiskanen. DeBoer praised his group’s ability to find a way.

“You take two key players out of anybody’s lineup and your team looks different,” DeBoer said after the first round. “What I liked about it was, we look different but we found a way, and that’s the most important part… I couldn’t be prouder of our group because we had to do it a different way”.

Getting Robertson back would be a significant offensive injection. His knack for finding the back of the net could be key against a feisty Jets squad and their star goalie, Connor Hellebuyck.

After being left off Team USA for the 4 Nations Face-Off, Robertson really turned it on, scoring 52 points in his final 46 regular-season games. This hot streak truly showed how much of a difference maker he can be for Dallas.

While there wasn’t a specific update on Heiskanen’s availability for Game 1, he has also been practicing. Young forward Wyatt Johnston acknowledged the challenge of playing without them.

“When you lose two guys like that, that are as important to our team as those two guys are, not many teams are getting through that,” Johnston said. “I think it just shows the resiliency and the depth that we have… Hopefully we get them back as soon as possible, because even though we can help try to fill those holes, they’re two amazing players”.

If Robertson does suit up, it’ll be a welcome sight for Dallas as they look to take an early series lead on the road.
