Jason Blake played 12 seasons in the NHL and never got close to a Stanley Cup. His son got there in two.
Jackson Blake scored a goal and added an assist in Carolina’s 3-0 win over Vegas in Game 6 on Sunday, the night the Hurricanes wrapped up their second championship. His dad watched the whole thing from the stands at T-Mobile Arena.
When the final horn sounded, Jackson looked up and found his old man in the seats. He talked about that moment on the ice afterward.
“I saw him up there,” Jackson said. “Oh, man, it’s emotional. He did so much for me. For us to do it together, right now, it’s unbelievable.”
Blake’s goal came in the second period. He took a feed from Logan Stankoven in the slot and beat Carter Hart to push the lead to 2-0.
Watch Blake double Carolina’s lead in Vegas:
Twelve seasons in the league never got Jason past the second round. He reached the playoffs six times and never played more than seven games in a single postseason, 30 playoff games in all. Jackson already has 34 in two seasons, with a ring to show for it.
The 22-year-old led the Hurricanes in postseason scoring with 20 points, seven goals and 13 assists in 19 games. Carolina has him locked up for a long time, and the team made sure to mention it:
Standing on the ice afterward, Jason talked about getting to live the win through his son.
“I was very fortunate to play in this league for as long as I did,” Jason said. “I’m blessed every day, but to see my son do what he did, win a Stanley Cup at his age, at 22, this organization, man, it’s the best. Now I get to kind of live vicariously through him and celebrate this with him because I never got to this point. It’s awesome.”
Years ago it was just the driveway and the sport court, Jackson pretending to be in exactly this spot. On Sunday it stopped being pretend.
