Frederik Andersen just won a Stanley Cup. He signed in Edmonton to chase another one.

Andersen met with Oilers media Monday for the first time since joining the club, and he was asked what drew him to Edmonton.

“Edmonton has been knocking on the door for a while now, it’s a team that’s got aspirations to try to win,” Andersen said. “They’ve been close and it would be awesome to help them get over the hump. I’m really excited about that opportunity.”

Here’s the clip of Andersen on why he picked the Oilers:

The 36-year-old is fresh off Carolina’s championship run, and he signed a one-year deal with Edmonton last week. He sees a lot of his old team in his new one.

In the postseason he was terrific, going 13-2 with a 1.89 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage across 16 games. He won 12 of his first 13 starts before the Hurricanes closed out Vegas in six.

He didn’t finish the job in net, though. Andersen got pulled in Game 3 of the Final and watched Brandon Bussi take the run home. That part still stings a little.

“It was a really fun run to be a part of and obviously the ending, I would have loved to play, but it still felt amazing to be a part of the team that hoisted it,” Andersen said.

Edmonton knows all about postseason heartbreak. Two straight trips to the Cup Final ended with losses to Florida, and last spring the Oilers went out in the first round against Anaheim.

Goaltending has been the question mark. Now the Oilers have a netminder who just learned what it takes to win it all.

Andersen has been to the mountaintop and knows the road there. The Oilers are betting a goalie with a fresh ring is the one who finally gets them a title of their own.
