Dylan Larkin will not be on the ice when Red Wings camp opens Thursday, and the trade request has nothing to do with it.
Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Wednesday that Larkin suffered an upper-body injury during off-ice training earlier this week. There is no timeline for his return.
Horcoff was asked how long Larkin will be sidelined and would not put a date on it.
“It’s going to take him a little bit of time to get back from it, and when we have a better timeline of when he will be back and available, we’ll let everybody know.”
He will stay with the team and rehab in Detroit. The Red Wings hope to get him into on-ice sessions at some point during the preseason.

Larkin asked out of Detroit in June, and the club announced last week that it will open the season without a captain.
Detroit named Horcoff interim GM on Tuesday, and he says he has full authority over hockey operations, including any Larkin trade. He would not say where those talks stand.
“I want to reiterate that we’re going to keep those conversations private between Dylan and the organization. There was a lot that kind of went into that, and we’ve had good discussions with Dylan. We’re happy that he’s here in camp.”
Five years remain on the eight-year, $69.6 million contract Larkin signed in March 2023. That $8.7 million cap hit is the hard part of any deal Detroit tries to build, and owner Chris Ilitch said last week that Larkin could still be here all season.
Last season was the best goal-scoring year of his career. Larkin put up 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games, then added three points in six games for the gold medal-winning United States team in Milano Cortina.
Simon Edvinsson is still unsigned as a restricted free agent, and Horcoff called that contract his priority. Detroit’s first practice is Thursday morning, and the 30-year-old center will be watching it.
