The Anaheim Ducks watched one offer sheet turn their offseason upside down. They weren’t about to let a second one do it.

Anaheim re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Pavel Mintyukov to a five-year, $36 million extension, per Frank Seravalli. That works out to a $7.2 million cap hit, with a $3 million signing bonus in the first year.

The deal wipes Mintyukov off the offer sheet board for good. Multiple teams had circled the 22-year-old, and at least one had a sheet ready to go before the Ducks stepped in.

Elliotte Friedman reported the two sides closing in earlier in the day, pointing to Brandt Clarke as the comparable:

Clarke signed a five-year, $37 million deal with the Kings in late June. Mintyukov landed right next to it.

Anaheim took Mintyukov 10th overall in 2022. The Moscow native put up 22 points in 73 games this past season, eight goals and 14 assists, and he’s now played 204 games across the bottom and middle of the Ducks blue line.

The extension comes after Philadelphia handed a record five-year, $90 million offer sheet to Ducks center Leo Carlsson. Days before locking Mintyukov up, Anaheim had him drawing offer sheet interest of his own.

The math gets tight from here. The Ducks sit around $35 million in cap space, but matching Carlsson’s sheet would swallow $18 million of it. RFA sniper Cutter Gauthier still needs a new contract too.

With Olen Zellweger shipped out in a trade, Mintyukov walks into a second-pair role behind Jackson LaCombe and gets a full runway to grow into it.
