Dave Tippett is convinced Connor McDavid gets his name on the Stanley Cup.
The former Oilers head coach joined Spittin’ Chiclets this week for a long look back at his playing and coaching days, and the McDavid section landed near the end. Asked about the Edmonton captain, Tippett skipped the hedging, per Daily Hive.
“He’ll win. He’ll win some day, I predict it.”

Before the prediction, Tippett was asked what McDavid is like once the cameras are off.
“He’s a good person. He’s an unbelievable player. But he’s got to watch everything he does because he’s in a fishbowl so much. You ask any of the players there, he’s a great teammate, really good teammate. He just has to be cognizant of what’s going on around him.”
There was one criticism, and it had nothing to do with how McDavid plays. Tippett thought his captain waved off his own big nights a little too quickly.
“The one knock I could say about him, there’s times he’d have an unbelievable game, five points or whatever. He was almost embarrassed by his success. He wanted to shy away from it. I always wondered the next game if he was kind of going to downplay it and not have a good game.”
He ran the Oilers bench for parts of three seasons between 2019 and 2022. The 64-year-old also went back further on the episode, to the stretch as a rookie when his assignment was Wayne Gretzky.

McDavid turns 30 in January and starts the first year of a two-year, $25 million extension this season. The Cup is still missing from his resume. Anaheim knocked Edmonton out in six games in the first round in April, and the captain called his own team average all year on the way out the door.
Tippett’s prediction carries no deadline. McDavid’s contract does, and it expires after the 2027-28 season.
