- Read below for what Burroughs brings and where he fits in Dallas
The Dallas Stars added a veteran to their blue line depth on Monday.
The team signed defenseman Kyle Burroughs to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2026-27 season. Here’s the announcement from Dallas:
Burroughs, 30, will likely earn close to the league minimum of $850,000. He’s a right-shot defenseman who has spent most of his career as a No. 7 option, and that’s the role he steps into with the Stars.
Dallas knows it needs bodies who can handle spot duty. Thomas Harley and Lian Bichsel both missed long stretches with injuries last season, so the Stars leaned on their depth more than they wanted to. Adding a veteran who can slot in without much fuss gives them some breathing room.
Outside of a five-game stint with Colorado back in 2020-21, Burroughs has bounced around as a depth piece with Vancouver, San Jose and the Los Angeles Kings. From 2021-22 through 2024-25 he played 195 games across those three teams, scoring five goals and 21 points while averaging just over 15 minutes a night.
Last year didn’t go his way. An injury limited him to 18 games with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, where he managed a goal and seven points.
He doesn’t usually line up on the left side, but Dallas gives him a real path to NHL minutes if the injury bug bites again. Stay healthy, and Burroughs could end up filling the veteran right-shot role Alexander Petrovic held, the guy the Stars call on when they need a steady hand.
It’s another small piece in a busy Dallas offseason that already has Jason Robertson heading to arbitration.
