HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sidney Crosby passes Steve Yzerman for sole possession of seventh place on the NHL’s all-time points list with 1,756 career points
  • Evgeni Malkin reaches 1,400 career points on the same goal, becoming the third Penguin to hit the mark alongside Crosby and Mario Lemieux
  • Read below for where both Penguins legends now stand on the all-time lists

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have been doing this together for 20 years. On Saturday night against the Panthers, they hit two more milestones on the same shift.

Malkin scored a power-play goal in the second period to reach 1,400 career points, and Crosby picked up the assist to pass Steve Yzerman for sole possession of seventh on the NHL’s all-time points list with 1,756. Two milestones, one goal, same shift.

Malkin is now the 23rd player in league history to hit 1,400 and just the third Penguin to do it, joining Crosby and Mario Lemieux (1,723). The 39-year-old has quietly put together one of the best careers of his generation. Pittsburgh made a big decision on Malkin’s future heading into this season, and he’s continued to prove he still belongs.

Passing Yzerman is significant for reasons beyond the numbers. Yzerman was one of Crosby’s childhood heroes growing up in Cole Harbour, and now the 38-year-old sits alone in seventh all-time with only Marcel Dionne (1,771) between him and a spot in the top six. He also now has the second-most points scored with a single franchise in NHL history, trailing only Gordie Howe’s 1,809 with Detroit.

The two of them have been the backbone of everything Pittsburgh has done for two decades — three Cups, countless milestones, and a partnership that’s become the longest-tenured trio in North American sports history alongside Kris Letang. Crosby has 67 points in 64 games this season. Malkin has 54. Both are still producing at a high level in their late 30s.

The Penguins sit in second in the Metro and are very much in the playoff picture. If this is the kind of hockey Crosby and Malkin are playing down the stretch, Pittsburgh could be a tough out in round one.
