Connor McDavid gave Oilers fans a brief heart attack on Wednesday night.

The captain went down after getting tangled up with teammate Mattias Ekholm midway through the second period of Game 2 against the Anaheim Ducks. The collision looked accidental and McDavid briefly left the ice.

Here’s what happened:

He was back on the ice within minutes. That’s when the new round of concerns started.

McDavid is still without a point for the second straight game and coughed up a bad giveaway shortly after returning to the ice. The kind of innocent-looking tangle that forces a guy off is usually the one you worry about the most.

He is back out there taking faceoffs and running his normal line with Zach Hyman, which is a good sign on the surface. Oilers fans have seen McDavid play through plenty before.

After the game, McDavid shut the door on any concern.

“It just got rolled up. It is fine,” McDavid said of his ankle. He walked in and out of the room normally with no limp.

If there’s even a whisper of something serious, I’d sit McDavid for Game 3. Edmonton has depth, Draisaitl is back, and there’s still plenty of series left. Anaheim is not the pushover some people assumed they’d be. Troy Terry, Leo Carlsson, and Cutter Gauthier have already shown that in this series.

Protecting the best player in the world is the only thing that matters right now. The rest will sort itself out.
