Connor McDavid is staying with the only franchise he’s ever known.

The Edmonton Oilers superstar announced on social media Monday morning that he’s re-signing with the Stanley Cup finalists ahead of the 2025-26 season. McDavid has taken a considerable discount, inking a two-year deal worth $12.5 million per season, far less than Kirill Kaprizov’s record-breaking extension last week.

A simple four-word message from McDavid, who has been the franchise cornerstone since he came into the NHL as the first overall pick in 2015. Contract talks have been ongoing, and there was some speculation about whether McDavid would leave the Oilers next summer as an unrestricted free agent after he made some cryptic comments on his future.

But, he evidently remains committed to bringing a Cup back to Edmonton. The three-time Hart Trophy winner is entering the final year of his eight-year contract, which will pay him $12.5 million this season.

McDavid has been nothing short of spectacular since making the NHL jump. He’s broken numerous records and was a key factor behind the Oilers making a second straight Stanley Cup in June, even though it ended in another defeat to the high-flying Florida Panthers.

McDavid finished 2024-25 with 26 goals and 74 assists. He also posted seven goals and 26 helpers in the postseason, collecting 33 points in just 22 games. The 28-year-old became just the third player in NHL history to register 30+ points in three playoffs, joining Wayne Gretzky (6 times) and Mark Messier (3 times).

Oilers fans will be ecstatic that their main man is staying put, and the fact he took less money shows just how badly McDavid wants to win in an Edmonton uniform.
