Macklin Celebrini closed his second NHL season by erasing a franchise legend from the record books. The 19-year-old buried a third-period goal Thursday night in San Jose’s 6-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets, giving him his 115th point of the year and pushing him past Joe Thornton’s single-season mark of 114 that had stood since 2006-07.
Celebrini finished with three points on the night. It was also his 18th three-point game of the season, which tied Thornton’s Sharks record in that category.
His teammates did what any bench would do. The water bottles came out, and Celebrini got blasted as soon as he reached the bench for glove pounds. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic was in the game, but that didn’t stop him from joining in on the fun from his crease.
The water didn’t stop when the buzzer sounded. More was waiting for him inside the room after the final horn.
Thornton made his feelings clear with a personal video message. The 2025 Hall of Fame inductee and former Sharks captain sent his congratulations directly to the new record holder.
“Mack, you know how I feel about you and your game,” Thornton said. “Just love watching you. Congratulations. You know the Thorntons love you and can’t wait to see you keep breaking even more of your own records.”
Celebrini’s record-breaking goal was his 45th of the year and gave the Sharks a 6-1 lead. Through 151 career games since San Jose took him No. 1 overall in 2024, he already has 175 points.
That scoring pace is why Celebrini earned a spot on Team Canada’s Olympic roster over the winter despite his age. A sophomore season like this one is going to follow him the rest of his career.
San Jose missed the playoffs again, but the franchise rebuild has a clear centerpiece. More on the record-breaking finale is available at NHL.com.
