- Carey Price turned 39 on Sunday, less than three months before his Hall of Fame induction
- A heckler came at him in February 2013 and got seven words back that never died
- Read below for the full exchange and where Price admitted he stole the line
Carey Price turned 39 on Sunday.
He owns a Vezina, a Hart, an Olympic gold and a Hockey Hall of Fame induction waiting in November. In one corner of the internet, though, the Canadiens legend is still known for seven words: “I’m still your moms favourite player.”
We dug the whole exchange back up for his birthday:
Both sides are right there in the graphic. On Feb. 21, 2013, a user going by @Bcap88 tore into Price after a Montreal loss, opening with “hey u bum. u face 10 shots and give up 2 goals” and finishing by suggesting Stevie Wonder would be a better option in the crease.
Price let it sit for about two hours. Then he answered once and never followed up:
The numbers that set the guy off were not even ugly. Price sat at 9-3-1 that week in the lockout-shortened season.
Days later, reporters asked the goalie where the line came from. Price admitted he had been sitting on it for a while and had lifted it straight from an NFL Play 60 commercial, the one where a kid tells Cam Newton he is going to become his mom’s favourite player. Price had simply been waiting on the right heckler.
Everything else about the career reads like a plaque already. Price played 712 games and won 361 of them, and both of those are Canadiens franchise records that nobody is touching soon.
His 2014-15 season was the peak. A 1.96 goals-against average and .933 save percentage brought him the Hart, the Vezina and the Ted Lindsay Award, plus a share of the Jennings. A year earlier he backstopped Canada to gold in Sochi.
Toronto gets him on Nov. 9, when he goes into the Hall alongside Patrice Bergeron, Pekka Rinne, Keith Tkachuk, Cindy Curley and builder Brian Burke.
Thirteen years later, both tweets are still sitting there for anyone who wants to scroll. Price never needed a second one.
