Cammi Granato is taking a step back in Vancouver, but she isn’t going anywhere.
Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson announced Friday that Granato is moving from assistant general manager to Senior Amateur Advisor. She keeps her seat in the hockey operations department and shifts her focus to the amateur side of the game.
Granato talked about why now felt like the right time to change lanes.
“After taking some time to reflect on things, I feel this is the perfect time to transition into a new role with the Canucks. Helping on the amateur side is something I am extremely passionate about, and I am thrilled to continue working with our hockey operations department on that front.”
She’s been an assistant GM in Vancouver since February 2022, when former president Jim Rutherford brought her in. The front office around her looks a lot different now.
Rutherford stepped down this spring, and the Canucks handed the GM job to Johnson while making Henrik and Daniel Sedin co-presidents of hockey operations. The new group wanted Granato to stay, just in a different chair.
Johnson explained what she brings to the amateur staff:
“Cammi is a quality person who knows a lot about the inner workings of our organization. She has built-in relationships and connections with our amateur staff that will help us continue to do good work in that area.”
The résumé runs deep. Granato captained Team USA to gold at the 1998 Olympics, earned a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010, and became the NHL’s first female pro scout when the Seattle Kraken hired her in 2019.
