The Penguins are out of the playoffs because Cam York buried an overtime winner from the point. He just wishes he hadn’t followed it up by hurling his stick into the stands.

York scored 17:32 into Game 6 overtime to send the Flyers past Pittsburgh and into the second round. The 25-year-old defenseman lifted his stick over his head and chucked it into the lower bowl at Xfinity Mobile Arena before sprinting back to celebrate with his teammates.

He addressed the moment with reporters after the game.

“I hope everyone is okay in the stands,” York told Daily Faceoff’s Tyler Kuehl. “Definitely don’t want a lawsuit. Just, honestly, blacked out. I didn’t know what to do. I was so excited. Just so happy for my teammates and obviously the fans.”

The stick did end up in fan hands. The Flyers’ social team retweeted a chain-of-custody report from the section it landed in.

That’s about as peaceful a resolution as a piece of carbon fiber landing on someone’s buddy can lead to.

The goal itself was a big one for York personally. His last lamp-lighter came January 21 in Salt Lake City. The wrister from the point caught Arturs Silovs short side and ended one of the tightest playoff series of the year, with Dan Vladar shutting Pittsburgh out for the second time in six games.

It was also the lone goal of Game 6 on either side. Both teams went 60 minutes without finding the net before York buried it in the extra frame.

Carolina is up next. The Hurricanes have been waiting since the weekend after sweeping Ottawa, and Round 2 begins Friday under Rick Tocchet’s first season behind the Philadelphia bench.

The only outstanding question for York is whether his Sherwood is on the way back. Based on the Flyers’ tweet, the search is still active.
