Quentin Musty is not a fighter. He made an exception for Cam Lund.
Lund took a hit from Los Angeles defenseman Jared Woolley midway through the first period of San Jose’s Rookie Faceoff opener at Tech CU Arena on Saturday. He came back out to test it, then sat for the final two periods of an 8-1 Sharks win. Musty dropped the gloves with Woolley in the third.

Barracuda coach John McCarthy called it an upper-body injury after the game and said Lund was still being evaluated, per Max Miller:
The fight came at center ice with 6:27 left. Woolley is 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, so Musty gave up three inches and 20 pounds to a defenseman who had been running around all night. It was one of three scraps in the final six minutes, a stretch that also included 7-foot-1 Alexander Karmanov dropping the gloves.
He was asked afterward why a skill winger with three fights in four OHL seasons picked that moment to answer the bell.
“(Fighting is) not something I’m trained to do. I think I’m more of a skilled forward, but anytime your teammates are getting roughed up like that, that’s the time I’ll step in and fight. Kind of started a war out there, but it’s the right thing to do when they’re going at guys like that,” Musty told Curtis Pashelka of the Mercury News.

The two Sharks prospects were drafted a year apart, lived together last season and started Saturday’s game on the same line. Musty was also asked how his friend was doing.
“I hope it’s not major. Obviously, it’s tough to see a guy go down like that. I lived with him last year. We got very close, and I love him as a teammate, love him as a friend. But that was one of the main reasons for the fight, and just trying to defend him that way.”
McCarthy said Sunday morning that the medical staff was still looking at Lund and that he would sit out that night’s exhibition against the Utah Mammoth, he told the Mercury News. San Jose opens main camp Thursday.
Losing him for any real stretch would sting. The 34th pick in the 2022 draft put up 25 points in 37 games as an AHL All-Star with the Barracuda last season before a February crash into the boards ended his year, and he has 11 NHL games and three points on his resume from the end of 2024-25.
Musty handled his part Saturday night. The Sharks should know more about Lund’s injury before camp opens Thursday.
