The Boston Bruins kept busy on the opening day of free agency.
Boston acquired defenseman Will Borgen from the New York Rangers on Tuesday, sending a 2027 second-round pick and a conditional 2028 third-rounder the other way. It was the Bruins’ second trade of the day.
That 2028 pick jumps to a second-rounder if Boston reaches the Eastern Conference Final in either of the next two seasons and Borgen plays in at least half of the team’s playoff games. The Rangers made the terms official right away:
Borgen became expendable in New York once the Rangers landed Marcus Pettersson from Vancouver earlier that day. The 29-year-old right-shot blueliner had been a regular for the Blueshirts, but the back-end math stopped working after that move. New York has been reshaping its blue line all summer.
Last season he put up five goals and 15 points in 75 games while averaging just over 18 minutes a night. He carries a $4.1 million cap hit that runs through 2029.
The move fits with Boston’s recent hire of Kevyn Adams to the front office. Adams ran the Sabres when Buffalo drafted Borgen and handed him his first NHL games, so the two go back a while. You can read more on the Adams hire here.
Borgen spelled out what kind of player the Bruins are getting when he met with Boston media:
“I try to be competitive every night, play hard against the other team’s top players,” Borgen said. “I try to play a physical game.”
He slots into a crowded Boston back end. A top-four spot is within reach if the Bruins move on from Mason Lohrei this offseason.
