The Tkachuk brothers are the newest names on a list the NHL has been keeping since the 1920s.
Florida acquired Brady Tkachuk from Ottawa on June 21 and dropped him onto a roster that already had older brother Matthew. NHL.com’s Stan Fischler wrote Wednesday that the move slots the pair in beside the Richards, the Potvins, the Sutters and the Cooks.
Brady sounded like a guy still running on adrenaline when the Panthers introduced him at War Memorial Auditorium on June 23. He was asked what the previous few days had felt like.
“We’re doing family pictures, and from then on, just couldn’t believe it,” Tkachuk said. “I know I’m going to need a couple days after this just to regroup and just really now think about everything that has happened, and I just can’t believe it’s real.”

Ottawa’s return was steep. The Senators got Florida’s 2026 first-round pick, Tampa Bay’s 2026 first that the Panthers had grabbed from Seattle earlier the same day, a 2027 second and a top-10 protected 2029 first. Senators GM Steve Staios later said he saw signs Tkachuk wanted out more than a year ago.
Brother acts have been winning in this league for a century. Bill and Bun Cook helped the Rangers take the Cup in 1928, the franchise’s second season, then won another in 1933.
Maurice and Henri Richard hold the family record with 19 rings between them, 11 for Henri and eight for Maurice. Montreal won the Cup in all five seasons the two skated together, and the 15-year age gap never got in the way.
Two sets of brothers powered the Islanders dynasty. Denis Potvin has said he could not have done it without Jean, and Duane and Brent Sutter played with the same bulldog edge the Tkachuks bring.
Plenty of teams are running the same play right now. New Jersey leans on Jack and Luke Hughes, and Minnesota reunited Nick and Marcus Foligno in a March 6 trade with Chicago that Nick called an amazing feeling.
His new number, 8, is a nod to Keith’s years in Atlanta:
Asked what he had heard around the league about coach Paul Maurice, Tkachuk didn’t bother playing it cool.
“Being able to learn a lot from him, I just wish the season started tomorrow,” he said.
He gets his first shot at it on Sept. 29, when Florida opens the season in Carolina.
