Boone Jenner is on the board in Washington.
The veteran forward scored his first goal as a Capital on Friday, breaking a 1-1 tie late in the second period of a 3-1 win over the Rangers at Capital One Arena.
Jenner, who signed a four-year, $23 million deal on July 1 after five years as Columbus captain, got it off the forecheck. Rangers rookie Cole Beaudoin tried to clear the puck, Jenner intercepted it and snapped a wrist shot past Dylan Garand from between the circles at 17:38.
Jenner was asked about the game feeling bigger against a division rival.
“Doesn’t matter what time of year, obviously when they’re in the division, they’re a little bit bigger,” Jenner said. “But at the end of the day you need to collect points, and I think it was a gutsy way to close out that game and make sure we got them.”
Check out the Capitals’ video of the goal:
Jenner credited Vincent Desharnais for staying on the puck carrier. “He’s right in that guy’s pockets, and I’m able to get a bounce off it and bury one,” Jenner said.
Timothy Liljegren had tied it 1-1 earlier in the period with his first goal for Washington, a one-timer from the point through a screen. Tom Wilson sealed it into an empty net with one second left, and Logan Thompson stopped 21 shots for the Capitals, who moved to 3-1-0.
The bigger story for New York was in goal. Igor Shesterkin left at 8:20 of the second period after jamming his right leg into the post, and he needed help getting off the ice. Our Shesterkin injury story has the details, and there was no update after the game.
Rangers coach Mike Sullivan was asked about losing his goalie. “When you see arguably your very best player (leave), that’s a tough loss for our team,” Sullivan said. “I thought we fought hard. I thought we battled.”
Alexis Lafreniere scored the Rangers’ only goal, his fourth in two games, and Garand stopped 11 of 12 in relief. Washington visits the Kraken on Sunday.
