Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini just did something the NHL hasn’t seen in over 80 years.
The 2023 & 2024 No. 1 overall picks both scored hat tricks on Tuesday night, becoming only the second pair of players 20 or younger to pull it off on the same night in NHL history.
The only other time? February 19, 1944, when Bud Poile and Jack Hamilton did it for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Bedard led the Blackhawks to a 5-2 win over Calgary with three goals, including a slick breakaway where he slipped the puck through Dustin Wolf’s legs. He finished the hat trick with an empty-netter late in the third.
The 20-year-old center now has 25 points in 16 games this season and has been rolling all month with 15 points in November alone.
Celebrini wasn’t about to be outdone. The 19-year-old scored his third goal in overtime to give San Jose a 3-2 victory over Utah.
His OT winner pushed him to 30 points in just 19 games, which is a ridiculous pace for a teenager.
These aren’t just two talented kids on the rise anymore. They’re legit superstars in the NHL.
Bedard (2023 No. 1 pick) and Celebrini (2024 No. 1 pick) are both sitting top-five in the NHL scoring race among all players, not just guys their age. They’re making Chicago and San Jose relevant again after years in the basement.
The fact that this hasn’t happened since 1944 puts it in perspective. That was more than a year before World War II ended. The league looked completely different back then.
Now we’ve got two generational talents doing it on the same night in 2025. Both from British Columbia. Both can’t legally drink in the States yet. Both lighting up the scoresheet every night.
The future everyone kept talking about? It’s already here.
