Alex Ovechkin continues to make history.
The Washington Capitals captain came into this season with 897 career goals after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record in the spring. He needed just three goals to become the first player to score 900 in the NHL.
It took a bit longer than some may have expected, but Ovechkin reached the 900-goal mark on Wednesday night in front of his home fans.
Ovechkin scored his first of the season in the fifth game on October 17th, his second for 899 a week later in the eighth game of the season, and he went five games without a goal before scoring No. 900 against the Blues.
Jacob Chychrun fired the puck off the back glass, and it ricocheted to in front of Ovechkin, who quickly turned and sent a backhand shot on net. Blues goalie Jordan Binnington failed to get over in time, and the rest is history.
Ovechkin was able to find twine from a tough angle to reach the historic milestone.
Binnington couldn’t stop the puck, but he found it after it went into the net and tried to hide it in his pants. The linesman wasn’t having it, though.
Goalies sure are an odd bunch.
The goal put the Capitals up 4-0 in the game, but it’ll have more meaning in the record books as the 900th of Ovechkin’s career.
