Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s leading goalscorer, suffered a lower-body injury Monday night against the Utah Hockey Club. Ovi left the game and didn’t return. There’s no further update on his status.
The injury occurred in the third period when Utah HC forward Jack McBain collided knee-on-knee with Ovechkin. Ovi fell to the ice in obvious pain and needed help getting off the ice.

Ovechkin remained on the bench for a few minutes before making his way down the tunnel to the Washington locker room.
There is concern over the possibility of an MCL injury, with some speculation on social media suggesting it could be a grade 1 or 2 injury, potentially sidelining him for 4-6 weeks if it’s not more severe.
Concern is an MCL injury for Ovechkin
Time off depends on grade and although it is hard to gauge grade by video, there wasn’t an extreme amount of inward stress so hopefully grade 1 or 2 and max 4-6 weeks out
Will add that a torn ACL is also possible but highly unlikely IMO https://t.co/HR0zAto31u

However, details about the exact nature and severity of the injury are still pending official medical evaluation and announcements from the team.
With no penalty on the play, Tom Wilson sought retribution later in the game, fighting McBain before the final buzzer. Watch the Wilson vs. McBain fight below:

The injury overshadows what was otherwise an amazing night for Ovi and the Caps. Ovechkin scored twice to become the NHL’s leading goalscorer, and the Capitals won 6-2. Ovechkin is now 27 goals back of Wayne Gretzky for the NHL goals record.
